Greece Travel Guide: Islands, Ancient Ruins & the Aegean Coast

Greece has a way of living up to the postcards — and then quietly exceeding them. The light really is that golden. The water really is that impossibly blue. And beneath the beauty is a country with 4,000 years of continuous history, still visible in every marble column and hillside ruin.

For a full overview of planning a trip here, see our complete Greece travel guide.

When to Go

The best months are May, June, September, and early October — warm enough to swim, cool enough to explore ruins comfortably, and considerably less crowded than July and August. Peak summer is beautiful but demands advance planning, especially on Santorini and Mykonos.

The Cyclades: Greece's Postcard Islands

The Cyclades are the islands most people picture when they think of Greece — whitewashed cubic houses, blue-domed churches, and cliffside sunsets. Santorini and Mykonos are the famous headliners, but Naxos, Paros, and Milos offer the same beauty with fewer crowds. For a deeper comparison of the two icons, see Santorini vs. Mykonos.

Athens: Where Ancient and Modern Collide

Most itineraries begin in Athens, and they should. The Acropolis and its museum are essential, but the city rewards a full two or three days — the Plaka neighborhood, the Central Market, and a rooftop dinner with the illuminated Parthenon in view. Read our full Athens & Ancient Greece guide for a deeper look.

Crete: Nearly a Country of Its Own

Crete is Greece's largest island and feels distinct from the Cyclades — mountainous, historically rich (home to the Minoan palace of Knossos), and blessed with some of the country's best food. It rewards at least four or five days on its own.

The Ionian Islands

On Greece's western side, islands like Corfu and Kefalonia have a lusher, greener character, shaped by centuries of Venetian influence. They pair well with a mainland Peloponnese itinerary.

Island-Hopping Logistics

High-speed ferries link the Cyclades efficiently in summer — Athens to Santorini takes about 4.5–8 hours depending on the route, or 40 minutes by air. Most travelers combine a flight into Athens with ferries or short flights between islands.

What to Eat

Greek food deserves its own dedicated trip planning. Our complete guide to Greek cuisine covers everything from Cretan olive oil to Santorini's volcanic wines.
