Athens & Ancient Greece: A Culture Lover's Guide

Athens is often treated as a one-day stopover before the islands, which is a mistake. This is a city where 2,500-year-old ruins sit beside rooftop cocktail bars, and it rewards at least two or three full days. It's also the natural starting point for any Greece itinerary.

The Acropolis and Its Museum

Arrive at opening time — the marble reflects the morning light beautifully, and the crowds and heat build quickly by midday. Beyond the Parthenon, don't rush past the Erechtheion and its Caryatid porch, or the Theatre of Dionysus on the southern slope. Afterward, the Acropolis Museum houses the originals of many sculptures replaced by casts on the hill itself, alongside a glass floor revealing an excavated ancient neighborhood below.

The Ancient Agora and Roman Forum

The Ancient Agora was the heart of civic life in classical Athens — Socrates taught here, and the well-preserved Temple of Hephaestus still stands watch over the site. Just north, the smaller Roman Forum and the octagonal Tower of the Winds show the city's later Roman-era layer.

The National Archaeological Museum

One of the great museums of the world, and easy to underestimate. The Mycenaean gold, including the mask often (if inaccurately) associated with Agamemnon, and the bronze Antikythera Mechanism — an ancient astronomical calculator — are worth the visit alone.

Plaka and Anafiotika

Athens' oldest neighborhood is a maze of narrow, bougainvillea-draped lanes at the foot of the Acropolis. Anafiotika, tucked into its upper corner, was built by island workers in the 19th century and looks — deliberately — like a Cycladic village transplanted into the capital.

Day Trips into Ancient Greece

With an extra day, Delphi (home to the legendary oracle) and the ancient theatre at Epidaurus are within reach, along with the fortified Mycenaean citadel at Mycenae in the Peloponnese.
