They're the two islands everyone names first when they think of Greece — and they couldn't be more different in character. Both belong on a 10-day Greek islands itinerary, but if you only have time for one, here's how to choose.
Santorini is defined by its caldera — the dramatic, curved remains of a volcanic eruption, with whitewashed towns like Oia and Fira perched along the cliff's edge. It is unapologetically romantic, quieter after dark, and built for slow evenings watching the sunset with a glass of local Assyrtiko wine.
Choose Santorini if you want: caldera views, a romantic or couples-focused trip, wine tasting, and a slightly more relaxed evening scene.
Mykonos trades cliffside drama for a livelier social scene — beach clubs, boutique shopping in Mykonos Town, and the iconic row of windmills overlooking the sea. Its beaches are genuinely excellent, with soft sand and a string of beach-club options from low-key to full-production.
Choose Mykonos if you want: a livelier nightlife scene, beach clubs, boutique shopping, and a more social atmosphere.
Santorini's restaurants lean into the view — expect caldera-facing terraces and volcanic wine pairings. Mykonos has a more cosmopolitan dining scene, with international chefs alongside classic tavernas. Our guide to Greek cuisine covers both in more depth.
Yes — and we usually recommend it. A ferry between the two islands takes roughly 2–3 hours, and splitting your time (3–4 nights each) gives you a genuine sense of both sides of the Cyclades. See our full 10-day itinerary for exactly how to structure it.
