When to Visit the Amalfi Coast

3 min read

Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is one of my favorite stretches of coastline in Italy to recommend — and one of the most visited too. I always tell my clients that timing is everything here.

I Tell Every Client to Avoid August

August turns the Amalfi Coast into traffic jams, overbooked restaurants, and sweltering heat. The narrow coastal road, the SS163, becomes almost impassable. Prices surge, and honestly, the magic you came for disappears beneath the crowds.

May Is My Sweet Spot

I usually recommend late April through May as the finest time to visit. Temperatures sit comfortably in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, the lemon groves are in full bloom, and the sea is just warm enough for the brave. Positano, Ravello, and Amalfi itself feel almost as they might have decades ago — unhurried and luminous.

Late September Is My Hidden Gem

Once the Italian school holidays end in mid-September, I find the coast exhales. The sea stays warm well into October, restaurants are still fully open, and the terraced hillsides get bathed in a softer, more golden light. I always mention that prices drop noticeably too.

My Practical Tips

  • I book my clients in Ravello or Praiano rather than Positano for a quieter base.
  • I always recommend the ferry between towns wherever possible — the road is spectacular but slow.
  • Dine late, as the Italians do. I tell everyone restaurants come alive after 8pm.
  • I suggest walking the Path of the Gods trail in the morning, before the heat builds.

I always say the Amalfi Coast rewards patience and timing. Go at the right moment, and you'll understand why I keep sending people here.
