Get Ahead of the Crowds

The Colosseum, Vatican Museums, and Sistine Chapel are at their most crowded from mid-morning through mid-afternoon. Private early-access tours — some starting before public opening hours — are the single best investment for a Rome trip, cutting hours of standing in line and letting you see the Sistine Chapel in near silence rather than shoulder-to-shoulder with tour groups.

Where to Stay

The historic center near the Pantheon or Piazza Navona puts you within walking distance of nearly everything, in a genuinely beautiful, quiet residential setting once the day-trip crowds clear out in the evening. Avoid hotels directly next to major train stations — convenient on paper, but far from the city's best neighborhoods.
