Amalfi Coast Luxury Itinerary: A Planning Guide

The Amalfi Coast is one of the most photographed stretches of coastline in the world — and one of the easiest to get wrong. Show up in August without a plan and you'll spend your vacation in traffic on the coastal road. Plan it well, and it's one of the most romantic, luxurious corners of Italy. This guide is part of our full Luxury Italian Vacation Planner.

Where to Base Yourself

Positano is the postcard — dramatic, vertical, and full of boutiques and cliffside restaurants, but also the most crowded and the most expensive. Ravello, perched higher above the coast, is quieter, more residential, and arguably more luxurious — many of the coast's most exclusive villas and hotels sit here. Praiano, between Positano and Amalfi town, offers the same views with a fraction of the crowds.

Getting Around Without the Stress

Skip the rental car. The coastal road is narrow, winding, and often gridlocked in peak season. A private driver or boat transfer between towns is faster, far more relaxing, and honestly part of the experience — arriving to a cliffside restaurant by boat is not a splurge, it's the smart way to travel this coast.

What to Actually Do

  • A private boat day around Capri, ideally arriving before the day-trip crowds from Naples
  • Dinner in Ravello at a restaurant with a view over the whole coastline
  • A cooking class focused on the region's lemons — Amalfi lemons are famous for good reason
  • A quiet morning in Amalfi town itself, before the cruise ship crowds arrive mid-morning

Pairing It With the Rest of Italy

The Amalfi Coast pairs beautifully with Rome as a first stop — about 3 hours by private transfer, or a shorter transfer via Naples. Many travelers also combine it with a few days in Tuscany for a coast-and-countryside contrast.

When to Visit

Late May through mid-June, and September, are ideal — warm sea, manageable crowds, and restaurants not yet fully booked out by high-season demand.
