The Maldives — 99% ocean, 26 coral atolls, nearly 1,200 islands — is a place I recommend to clients who want barefoot luxury done right, and it always lives up to the reputation.
I tell every client the atoll choice shapes the whole trip. North Malé Atoll is closest to the airport and great for first-timers. I love sending people to Baa Atoll — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — to snorkel with manta rays at Hanifaru Bay between May and November. And for those wanting real solitude, Addu Atoll at the southern tip offers wreck diving and a glimpse of local life most tourists never see.
In my experience, the diving and snorkelling here is some of the finest in the world. Coral gardens with reef sharks, hawksbill turtles, Napoleon wrasse, and huge schools of fish surround nearly every island. I always tell clients — even if you're not a diver, step off a sandbank into that water and you'll be amazed at what's right there.
I always remind clients the Maldives is more than its luxury resorts. I love recommending local island stays — on Maafushi, Thulusdhoo, or Fulidhoo — for a window into real Maldivian culture and fresh seafood, at a fraction of the resort price, with access to the same reefs and lagoons.
My advice: November–April is dry season with calm seas and the best visibility. May–October brings the monsoon, but also manta rays and whale sharks. If you want December–January, I tell clients to book premium resorts 6+ months ahead.
