There is a particular kind of traveller — and most of us have been them — who arrives at the airport with a suitcase that requires checking, a second bag that is technically carry-on, and a jacket whose pockets are functioning as a third. The journey begins before it begins, in the effort of managing objects.
Packing light is not about deprivation. It is about clarity. For a step-by-step example, see our guide to packing for a two-week European trip in a single carry-on.
The honest answer is: far less than you packed last time.
Experienced travellers converge, eventually, on the same conclusion: three to four days of clothing, laundered as needed, is sufficient for any trip of any length. A single versatile pair of shoes handles ninety percent of situations. The elaborate contingency items — the fourth pair of trousers for the formal dinner that never materialised — stay in the bag, unworn, for the entire journey.
A carry-on sized bag — 20 to 30 litres — is enough for two weeks in Europe, a month in Asia, a long weekend in New York. It fits in the overhead locker. It fits under your seat. It means you step off the plane and walk directly into the city, unencumbered.
With a single bag, you can take the last-minute train, change hotels on a whim, walk from the station rather than queuing for a taxi. You are not anchored to your luggage.
There is a psychological effect to owning fewer options. When every item in the bag has a purpose, the low-level anxiety of excess disappears. You stop managing your belongings and start inhabiting the place you came to see.
Do not underestimate the pleasure of a slow afternoon in a local laundrette, or rinsing things in a hotel sink while the city moves outside the window. It is one of the most quietly satisfying acts of travel — a moment of ordinary life in an extraordinary place.
The bag you carry is, in its way, a statement of intent. The lighter it is, the more clearly it says: I am here to experience, not to manage. That distinction makes all the difference.
